Tourism
and Development Issues in Contemporary South Africa Tourism
Edited by Christian M. Rogerson and Gustav Visser, Africa Institute
of South Africa
Summary
Tourism is recognised as one of the sectors with the most potential
to contribute to the economic regeneration of the African continent.
South Africa represents a special case, as the tourism sector was 'anti-developmental'
during apartheid. Since the democratic transition, tourism is viewed
however, as an essential sector for national reconstruction and development.
This volume contributes to ongoing policy devates and an academic understanding
of the shifting roles of tourism, development and empowerment. Some
themes dealt with are pro-poor tourism, tourism education, the use of
new technologies, investment, nature-based tourism, new products and
current barriers to development tourism. The volume is conceived to
have relevance to South Africa as well as other parts of Africa and
the developing world.This
book is avaliable to order from the African
Books Collective.
