Tourism
in Poor Rural Areas: Diversifying the Product and Expanding the Benefits
in Rural Uganda and The Czech Republic
Summary:
This working paper explores strategies for expanding tourism in poor rural
areas. It draws on an overview of the likely challenges and motivations
involved in promoting rural tourism away from established tourism centres,
and on two case studies, one in the Czech Republic and one in Uganda,
complemented by insights from other rural tourism initiatives elsewhere.
The paper outlines the importance and likely obstacles of rural tourism,
thus sets out the key challenges on which practical lessons are needed.
While the paper does not seek to provide a comprehensive review of international
experience of rural tourism approaches, it provides the key background
on different types of approaches. In particular, it outlines the differing
context for rural tourism strategies in Eastern Europe and sub-Saharan
Africa.
